Jon Chaffin is an extremely talented an actor whom Soap Opera Intel had the utmost pleasure of having a chat with. Chaffin who plays Warlock aka War on Tyler Perry's hit primetime drama 'The Haves and the Have Nots' sat down for a discussion in which he talked about his landing the role of Warlock on "HAHN", the emotional episodes surrounding Little Q's death, Upcoming Projects and even disclosed that he will be getting married later this year. Jon, we must acknowledge how very talented you are. Watching you on 'The Haves and the Have Nots' is such a pleasure - how do you do it? War is such antagonist, do you have any challenges bringing off such a character?
Jon: Thank you so much. I appreciate that. War is a figment of my imagination. I simply fused people that I knew and experiences that I've had, and used that as a foundation to build the character, then I filled in the rest with my imagination. Because I'm the complete opposite of War, it's a journey going to the places that he has to go, but I love it.
This season of 'HAHN' is very intriguing. Fans are dying to see the moment that War and Candace comes face-to-face again and the moment she learns about the death of her son and his part in it. What can you tease about that?
Jon: Well, without giving away too much, Candace and War will come face-to-face again, but the outcome won't be what people expect. Tyler [Perry] always puts twist in his stories to leave his audiences guessing.
It was such a dramatic episode for a lot of viewers as they watch the stars give dynamic and emotional performances in the episode that Little Q died. Was it a very emotional day on the set? What are your thoughts on Little Q being killed off?
Jon: It was. Everyone knew what was coming that day, so there was a lil solemn feeling in the air. It was a tough scene to shoot, because I knew that at that moment, everything was going to change for the characters. Jordan Preston Carter [Lil Q] is such a talented young kid. He was a trooper. We're so grateful to him and his talent. I can't wait to see what else he does. He has a very bright future ahead of him.
And, it's all your fault right? LOL...Well, do you think there is any change for Warlock? Could we see him going in a total direction? What are your hopes for the character?
Jon: It was War's fault. I mean, if he hadn't come to the hotel, guns blazing, Lil Q would still be alive. I don't think War truly realizes the error of his ways, and he's gone to the point of no return. It's sad, but that's reality. There are Warlocks all over and that's the scary part. Because he was never loved in the way he needed love, he doesn't know how to give it. That's the tragic irony of it all. I think we all saw it coming, eventhough we hoped he'd make the change. But some people, you just can't reach, no mater how hard you try.
How did you land the role of Warlock by the way?
Jon: I got the role the old fashioned way. I auditioned. When my agent sent it to me, I immediately connected to him, because I understood his life and to an extent, his morals. I may not agree with them personally, but as an Actor, we never judge the character we're playing. We have to find similarities and through the process, find a way to connect to them. No matter if they're the most evil and vile character. Empathy is the key. We're all human beings, which means, we're all capable of the same things. So, I had to remove myself and my morals, in order to find that connection. There's a little bit of Warlock in all of us, whether we want to admit it or not.
Can you say - what has been your favorite scene on the show so far?
Jon: Oh wow. That's hard. There are so many. I truly can't pick one. I love all my scenes with Candace [Tika Sumpter] and Jim [John Schneider]. I love watching everyone's work on the show. They're all such talented and gifted artists. I would have to say though, I was ecstatic to work with Hanna [Crystal Fox]. I had been hoping to get a scene with her, and when it finally came time, I jumped in with both feet.
Apart from acting you're also a writer and a producer tell us a little more about that aspect of your career.
Jon: Yea, I write and have two screenplays that I've written and currently working on a third. I love every aspect of film making. The process from conception to completion thrills me. I'm always learning and working to get better, be it in front of the camera, or behind. I started my career behind the camera, so there's already a comfort level there. I hope to do more producing in the future, as well as trying my hand at Directing. I think that's something I'd be really good at. One day, maybe I'll get to direct my scripts, who knows!
You recently guest starred on "Stitchers" what was that experience like for you and will there be more primetime guest appearances coming up soon?
Jon: Stitchers was a great experience. Working with that cast and crew was a gift and a pleasure. And yes, you'll see more. I am currently working on a film in Oakland, starring Daveed Diggs [Hamilton, Black-ish, The Get Down] and Rafael Casal [Def Poetry], who both wrote the film. I play their best-friend and all-around hustler, Dez. It's going to be a hilarious, thought-provoking film and I can't wait for everyone to see it. I also do theatre, and will be going back to the stage, hopefully, by the end of the year to do another August Wilson play. I did King Hedley II early this year with a stellar cast.
We can definitely see you hitting it off as a bad guy or a villain on daytime soap opera, on any one of the remaining sudsers; Y&R, B&B, General Hospital or Days of Our Lives, what are your thoughts on that?
Jon: I don't watch soap operas too often, mainly because I just don't have the time during the day, but I'm always open to a challenge. Although I have played many bad guys, there's a silly and sensitive side to me that not a lot of people get to see. I would like to explore more of those roles as well. I have a pretty diverse range of roles I've been gifted to play, so I'm always looking for the one that's going to be fulfilling and challenging at the same time.
What's on the horizon for you as an actor? Any upcoming projects? Any other developments business wise, romantic interest/development or so?
Jon: Well as far as the acting side of things, I have the movie, Blindspotting, that I just mentioned, and other projects in the works. And I hope to get back on stage again this year, or definitely at the top of 2018. On a personal note, I am getting married in September. I don't like to talk about my personal life too often, mainly because my profession is one that is public, so I like to have some privacy. I do post little things sometimes, but for the most part, I like to keep my personal life personal. But we'll see how long that last. Lol. In this day and age of social media, it's not always easy.
